US stocks stuttered on Friday to end the week lower. Daily declines of less than 1% for the broad indices paled from Tuesday, when they were down 4% to 5%.

For the week, the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA
fell 1,329 points (or 4.1%) to close at 30,822 on Friday. The benchmark S&P 500 SPX
was down 4.8% on the week, while the Nasdaq Composite Index COMP
5.5% abandoned.

Investors were nervous, reacting to signs of continued consumer price hikes or economic strength heading into the September 20-21 Federal Open Market Committee meeting. The FOMC is due to make a policy announcement on Wednesday, September 21, followed by Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell’s press briefing.

In the S&P 500, 95% of stocks ended the week down. On Friday, FedEx Corp. the most prominent loser, whose shares FDX fell 21% during the session after the company issued a profit warning citing weaker business conditions.
